British Quinoa
We, The British Quinoa Company Ltd, have been at the forefront of British quinoa production in the UK for many years, having produced our first commercial crop in 2013 after many years of research. We are now scaling up our British quinoa production area to supply a growing market and are always keen to hear from potential new growers would would like to join us on our journey.

We are a small family business located in Shropshire, UK. As strong enthusiasts of quinoa we strive to bring this wonderful grain into widespread use within the UK!
We are growers of British quinoa grains and also importers of French grown quinoa.
We work closely with our quinoa growers to ensure a consistently high quality product. We aim to offer a fast, friendly and personal service to all our buyers.

Are quinoa grains good for you?
Yes! But don’t just take our word for it, studies have shown just how good it can be for you. A recent review by Vega-Galvez et al. (2010) stated that “It’s grains have higher nutritive value than traditional cereals and is a promising cultivar for human consumption and nutrition” and “Quinoa is an excellent example of a functional food that aims at lowering the risk of various diseases”.

Quinoa has been shown to be a great addition to several food products. Stikic et al. (2012) state that, in relation to bread “The study on the new form of quinoa presentation such as bread supplemented with quinoa seeds could enable the development of a range of new baking products with enhanced nutritive value”. Additionally, Farinazzi-Machado et al. (2012) concluded that in relation to quinoa in cereal bars “the use of quinoa in diets can be considered beneficial in the prevention and treatment of risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases that are among the leading causes of death in today’s globalised world”.
Now that sounds like a pretty impressive little grain!
What can quinoa be used in?

Quinoa is a very versatile grain and can be used in the production of several foods, including:

-Salads,
-Ready prepared meals,
-Breads,
-Crisp breads,
-Pastas,
-Biscuits,
-Breakfast cereals,
-Ready prepared grains.

We cook and eat quinoa like many other grains, but, botanically speaking, it’s a relative of spinach, beets and chard. The part we eat is actually the seed, cooked like rice, which is why quinoa is gluten-free. You can even eat the leaves!

Quinoa Is A Complete Protein
A 1955 paper dubbed quinoa a superstar long before 21st century publications were touting it for its nutritional powers. The authors of “Nutritive Values of Crops, Nutrient Content and Protein Quality of Quinoa and Cañihua, Edible Seed Products of the Andes Mountains” wrote:
While no single food can supply all the essential life sustaining nutrients, quinoa comes as close as any other in the plant or animal kingdom.
That’s because quinoa is what’s called a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine of the essential amino acids, which cannot be made by the body and therefore must come from food.

Our Product
We supply wholegrain quinoa grains to our customers, which are fully processed and ready to use. All of our quinoa is produced within the EU and we supply solely for the UK market. Currently we do not supply organic quinoa.
Our quinoa is special as it is one of the first varieties to be classed as a ‘sweet’ quinoa, meaning that it has been bred to contain none of the saponin coating that other quinoa varieties have present and therefore does not require polishing. This is significant as it allows for us to produce a truly whole grain product, retaining its full nutty flavour and nutritional content. This gives our quinoa a darker look but with vastly more flavour.
Processing is carried out to ensure our grains are clean and contaminant free. Prior to cooking, all that our quinoa needs is a quick rinse with clean water.
Our supply chain is fully segregated from gluten containing products, ensuring that contamination does not occur and preserving the gluten free status of our produce.
