ABOUT

Greenshutters Garden Centre has been a nursery or garden centre for many years. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, it grew cut flowers for a shop in Taunton and was a specialist in Freesias and Orchids. It became a well-run retail nursery in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s growing and selling garden plants before falling on hard times in the late 1990’s. I purchased the struggling nursery in 1998.

My name is Roger Eavis and I am the current owner of Greenshutters Nurseries & Garden Centre. I was brought up on my father’s retail nursery and helped him with the watering, taking cuttings, sowing seeds and potting up from the age of 7. I studied at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and went on to do a PhD in Plant and Crop Physiology at Wye College (University of London). I worked in agricultural research and as a lecturer at SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) before buying the five-acre site of Greenshutters Nurseries and starting my own business.

Over the years, with the help of my staff, I have built the nursery and garden centre up steadily, expanding our growing area every year. We grow plants on the nursery for the Garden Centre and also for our on-line hedging shop, EVERGREENHEDGING.com and in 2014 we purchased another 11 acres of land adjacent to the nursery to allow for future expansion.

I believe that a Garden Centre should focus on plants. At Greenshutters, we have tried to create a pleasant area to walk among the plants with benches to sit and rest as you go around. As well as the usual plants you find in most garden centres, we try and stock some more unusual and interesting plants and we have one of the largest collections of trees and hedging in the south west of England.

I have a great team working with me at Greenshutters Garden Centre who, like me, believe in good customer service, good quality plants and who are always willing to help and give advice. We hope you will pop in and see us.

Roger Eavis, Owner of Greenshutters Nurseries & Garden Centre
