At the time of the Norman Conquest all land was deemed to belong to the sovereign.  He rewarded his henchmen by allocating them an area of land, the size of which was dependent on how much they could do for him.

Much Wenlock has been a market town for over 800 years.  In 1138 King Stephen granted Wenlock Priory a three-day fair on 23 – 25 June.  By 1224 weekly markets were being held on Sundays.  In that same year Henry III visited the town, and granted that the Priory should change market day from Monday to Sunday.

In 1468 Edward IV granted a Charter to the Borough of Wenlock which granted new freedoms including the right to raise taxes and freedom from interference by the County’s Sheriff.  The Charter also allowed the Borough to raise revenue from holding markets and a fair in June, as well as control over the price of basic foodstuffs.

The Town Council continues to offer shoppers a great choice of produce from a variety of producers and sellers. These range from fresh fruit and vegetables to locally produced pies, preserves, honey and meats. Alongside our local producers we also have traders selling all sorts of general and household products, books, vintage clothing, arts, crafts and plants. The Buttermarket, Square and Corn Exchange are available to hire for markets, live music, demonstrations, exhibitions, festivals, charity events and more!
