The Nursery

Over the last 25 years, as visitor numbers to the garden have increased, the nursery has grown to meet the demand for high quality garden plants. We grow a wide selection of herbaceous perennials, grasses, tender plants and choice shrubs. Bulbs are available dry, from late summer, and potted, through the year. There is no admission charge if you only wish to visit the nursery on your trip to Coton, and we hold Autumn plant sales every year.

The majority of our stock has been propagated here at Coton, mostly from specimens grown in the garden, which is on an improved clay averaging pH6.5. It is common to admire a plant in the garden and be able to buy a new plant propagated from it. A peat free potting compost is used throughout the nursery.

We advocate the use of natural predators and nematodes where required and this has proved very successful. The nursery has developed a reputation for producing high quality plants. This is helped by the fact that hardy stock is kept outside all year round, resulting in a plant more accustomed to the vagaries of the weather. Only tender and half-hardy plants are over-wintered under glass.

Please note that some varieties are only grown in small quantities, so do please call to check availability before travelling.

The Gardens

Originally laid out in the 1920’s by the grandparents of the present owner, the garden has been developed and extended by successive generations capitalising on its natural setting, attractive views and abundant water. The 17th century manor house acts as a central focus for the garden, its walls supporting many roses and shrubs, while the surrounding terraces are populated by numerous colourful pots and containers.

The widely respected Good Gardens Guide says of Coton ‘This is a beautifully maintained garden of exceptional charm with unexpected vistas at every turn … there is something for everyone here’.
